Our History

The first chapter organized in the State of Tennessee was the Dolly Madison Chapter of Memphis.  The name was later changed to the Hermitage Chapter.  It was organized December 18, 1892 by Mrs. Harvey Mathes.  Mrs. Mathes was made Organizing Regent of Tennessee.  During her Regency from 1893 to 1898, she organized 14 additional chapters.  Mrs. Mathes was also elected the First Honorary Vice-President General NSDAR in 1899.
