Chapter History
In 1968, Mrs. Harry A.
Gervin was appointed to be Organizing Regent of a DAR chapter in the Gatlinburg
area. A group of women met at the First Methodist Church, Gatlinburg, early in
1968, to select a name for the new chapter. Three names were suggested: Great
Smokies, Eratis, and High Horizons. The name Great Smokies was chosen to show the
link between Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The
necessary papers were then signed to bring a new DAR chapter into existence.
The organizational meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Ralph S. Shilling. There
were twenty women accepted as charter members.
The first officers installed were:

In March 1970, the Great Smokies Chapter hosted
the TSDAR State Conference in Gatlinburg. During the State Conference,
Great Smokies placed an historical marker on the Ogle Cabin, a building dating
from 1804 or earlier. Lucinda Ogle, a Great Smokies
Chapter member and descendant of this family, was present.

Another historical marker was placed on the Harrisburg covered bridge near
Sevierville on Flag Day, June 14, 1970, by members of the Great Smokies and Spencer Clack Chapters.
With each new administration, our
chapter has moved forward. Great Smokies
has become a closely-knit working unit and a credit to the National Society.
