Memorial Day – Never Forget

Memorial Day is one of those holidays that for some has lost its real purpose and meaning. While many of our friends and neighbors have forgotten why we have a day off from work, DAR daughters do remember the importance of the day and why it is a national holiday that we celebrate every year. It is a day of remembrance, an observance of the loss of the men and women that have given their lives for our freedoms.

Originally know as Dedication Day, a day for family and loved ones to decorate and visit the graves of those who had passed after the Civil War, Memorial Day became a national holiday in 1971. Celebrated the last Monday of May, Memorial Day has become a time to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. This morning during our house church we discussed the importance of Memorial Day and why we can’t forget what these patriots have done for us. The act of thinking of them and their sacrifices each year help us to remember what we gained as a Nation through their service. I hope that you will remember those that have given so much for us and share their stories with your loved ones.

I know that each of you will also think of your patriot ancestors today that fought and died for our country as well as the friends and family you may have lost giving service to our nation. While this may be an unusual year, without the parades and wreath layings we normally see, we can still remember these brave men and women, in our hearts and in our minds. May we never forget; their lives, their service to our country, and the freedoms they insured for all of us. Never Forget.
