Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

Today’s blog is written by TSDAR First Vice Regent and Vice Chair of the Perfect 36, Emily Robinson. With the big day almost upon us there are several things we can do from home to celebrate this week, and we invited you to join us. In Service, Cecile

Lobby of the Historic Hermitage Hotel

The 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment is almost here! Although many of us are apart physically, we can celebrate together virtually. Different areas of the state will have different events, but here are some which we will all want to watch or be a participant in on the anniversary, Tuesday, August 18.

Reenactment of the ratification of the 19th Amendment

The State of Tennessee will commemorate its role in the Ratification of the 19th Amendment, with a reenactment of the historic and close vote. The reenactment event on August 18, titled “Our Century! Living Tennessee’s History of the Ratification,” will take place on the floor of the House chamber at the State Capitol – the same day and place it did a century ago – and be live-streamed beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT/10:30 a.m. ET via the TNWoman100 Facebook page and YouTube page, as well as the Facebook pages of the Tennessee State Library and ArchivesTennessee State MuseumTennessee State Parks, and Tennessee Historical Society. TNWoman100.com is the website of The Official Committee of the State of Tennessee Woman Suffrage Centennial.

Nashville Ballet performance of “72 Steps”

As announced in a previous Dogwood Note, and at our State Conference, the Tennessee Society has awarded the Nashville Ballet the Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism Award for their production of “72 Steps.” This production commemorates Tennessee’s historic role in ratifying the 19th Amendment, and the name comes from the 72 steps at the capitol. On Tuesday, August 18, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm the Nashville Ballet will be presenting a free digital performance of this production, and you are invited to view via a live-stream link. Please visit this site to register for a link to their performance. I hope you will join me in watching this performance that evening.

TSDAR Virtual Suffrage Parade

Join TSDAR in marching in the Tennessee Society DAR Virtual Suffrage Parade! We will begin the parade on August 18, the 100th anniversary of the day Tennessee ratified the proposed 19th Amendment. On that day and the days that follow, we want to flood social media with your your pictures and honor the women who worked to bring about women’s suffrage and Tennessee’s place in history as the Perfect 36 state. The virtual parade will end on August 26, with our TSDAR virtual Perfect 36 Celebration.

Here are instructions to march in the virtual parade on our TSDAR Members Private Facebook group:

1. State Regent Cecile Wimberley will begin the parade with a post on August 18, on our TSDAR Members Facebook page. Look for her Facebook post that day!

2. After our State Regent begins the parade, you can join the parade by posting a photo of yourself dressed in white or in suffrage clothing on our TSDAR Members Only Facebook Page.

3. If you choose, in your post you can honor your favorite suffragist – either a local, state or national suffragist.

4. Using the hashtag on our Members Facebook page:  #tndarsuffrage100:

If you include the hashtag with your post on our Member’s Facebook page, it gives TSDAR permission to use your photo and writeup on the public Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution Facebook page and Instagram account. If you don’t want to give permission for your post to be used publicly, do NOT use the hashtag.

5. Watch the parade of members on our private site through August 26th.

You can also parade in public!

1. If you choose, you can also make your post on your personal Facebook page.

2. You can make it visible to the general public by following the instructions found at the link: https://www.facebook.com/help/120939471321735/?ref=u2u.

3. Using the hashtag on your personal Facebook page: #tndarsuffrage100:

If you include the hashtag on your post on your personal page, and you have made your personal post public, when you search #tndarsuffrage100 on social media, you will be included in the public parade of members, and you will be seen by the general public.

If you include the hashtag on your post on your personal page, and have not made your personal post public, when you search #tndarsuffrage100 on social media, you will be included in the parade of members but will only be able to be seen by your Friends.

Let’s all dress in white, don our hats and sashes, and join the parade to bring light to this very important event in our nation’s history, to celebrate Tennessee’s place as the Perfect 36 state, and to honor the women who fought to give each of us the right to vote! – Emily
