Last week we introduced a new member contest, and this week I am pleased to be introducing a new student contest. You may recall that last year the National Society determined that the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest was out of keeping with the timeframe we are promoting with our historic preservation and education efforts and determined that we would be replacing it with a contest that would place emphasis on the Revolution as we geared up for the 250th.

This year the National Society is launching the “Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest.” This contest targets students from grades 9-12 with all grades judged together with one national winner selected. Essays will focus on a figure from the American Revolution (1773-1783) and can be about anyone that played a role in the birth of our nation. Chapters are encouraged to promote this contest within public, private, or homeschool communities to select a chapter winner that will then move on for state level judging. The state contest will be conducted by State Vice Chair Abigail Braddock Simone. More information can be found on the President General’s Facebook page or by visiting forms at dar.org. I hope we have every chapter participate in this new contest. How exciting it would be if Tennessee has the first winner in 2022!
