WHAT WE DO
CHAPTER ACTIVITIES
Cumberland Chapter, NSDAR, is very active in our community in the areas of historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
Historic Preservation

The Cumberland Chapter, NSDAR, has been very involved in historic preservation projects throughout the years. Members have cleaned and restored cemeteries, placed historic markers, preserved family Bible records and family artifacts, and dedicated NSDAR insignia markers at the grave sites of four members who served as Tennessee Society DAR (TSDAR) state regents.
Community Classroom

Members supporting a literacy incentive program at Whitsitt Elementary School.

Members host Christmas parties for the four 4th grade classes.
In 2016, Cumberland Chapter, NSDAR, became a PENCIL partner with Whitsitt Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee. Our chapter members have enthusiastically supported the school in many different areas, including serving as reading tutors, assisting with the school Book Fair, and sponsoring Christmas and end of the year parties.
Three members have participated in Power Monday by providing these lessons to 3rd and 4th grade students: Flag Etiquette, How a Bill Becomes a Law, National Parks – Saving America, and Leave No Trace – Conservation.
Whitsitt Elementary School is also the setting for our Constitution Week event. Members create a Constitution Week display in the library, present programs on the Constitution to each 4th grade class, and give students Constitution Booklets with age-appropriate historical facts and coloring pages, flag bookmarks, and crayons.
Patriotism

Members creating personal hygiene towel rolls for female veterans.

Our chapter regent donating female hygiene products to the Women’s Veterans Health Center in Nashville.
Our chapter enjoys supporting our veterans and active duty military. Each Veterans Day and Christmas, members deliver snacks and cards with personalized messages and snacks for the veterans at the Nashville VA.
Two recent Day of Service projects included providing personal hygiene items for female veterans. This year, the items were rolled in a towel and secured with a red, white, and blue ribbon. Attached to the towel roll was a thank you card and a piece of jewelry.
Community Awards
In April 2020, the Cumberland Chapter, NSDAR, had the pleasure to present the distinguished DAR Americanism Medal to Dr. Jorge Rojas-Brassetti. Dr. Rojas-Brassetti is a noted neonatalist who has made significant contributions to the medical field. He is also a naturalized citizen and has worked hard over the years to help other immigrants in his community.
The chapter has for more than eight years awarded annually a JROTC Medal to a Cadet at Maplewood High School in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School system. We are so proud of these patriotic young men and women!
