Our Patriots

Dedicated to our Patriot ancestors
who made the history that we are honored to preserve.

Who were the Patriots?

Patriots were members of the 13 British colonies who rebelled against British control during the American Revolutionary War, supporting instead the United States Continental Congress. They were all of the individuals who provided patriotic service. DAR recognizes women’s patriotic contributions as well as those of soldiers.

American Revolutionary War 1775 – 1783

The American Revolutionary War of Independence was a War of Ideas. It was initiated by the delegates from the 13 American colonies against Great Britain. The colonists objected to Parliament’s taxation policies and lack of colonial representation.

The war began at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, in 1775, then ended with a major American victory at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781. The Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3, 1783.
