S. Rankin, under the leadership of Carrie McGaughey Clemens, Organizing Regent, and sixteen other organizing members. Twenty-seven additional ladies became charter members, totaling a membership of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tndar.org\/~nolachuckey\/index.php\/history\/\" rel=\"noopener\">forty-five Daughters<\/a> in the chapter&#8217;s inaugural year.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a0007f6 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a0007f6\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8de6ad3\" data-id=\"8de6ad3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b919f48 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b919f48\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One charter member was Martha Barkley Patterson, granddaughter-in-law of President Andrew Johnson. In the initial years of the chapter, guided by Mrs. Patterson and her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Patterson Bartlett, Nolachuckey Daughters worked to preserve President Andrew Johnson&#8217;s Tailor Shop and encouraged the government to create the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site. Today the site includes President Andrew Johnson&#8217;s Early Home, Tailor Shop, Homestead, and National Cemetery. The scholarship is still awarded to this day. In 1994, Nolachuckey Daughter Mary Hurley Wells willed $66,000 to ensure the continuation of this and other scholarships. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tndar.org\/~nolachuckey\/index.php\/scholarships\/\">Mary Hurley Wells Scholarship<\/a> is awarded yearly to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tndar.org\/~nolachuckey\/index.php\/scholarships\/\">Carrie McGaughey Clemens Scholarship<\/a> is awarded yearly to a young woman attending Tusculum University.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1b3b1a0 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1b3b1a0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a24d5e1\" data-id=\"a24d5e1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2bf31f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2bf31f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Historic preservation continued to be a central focus of the chapter in the 1950s. Nolachuckey Daughters began raising money to restore and maintain Greeneville&#8217;s oldest cemetery, Old Harmony. The chapter held a fashion show for one of these fundraising ventures. In the following decades, the chapter has restored Old Harmony, mapped it, built and maintained a brick wall around it, and placed several markers to honor the Patriots buried there. During the same decade, Nolachuckey Daughter Goldene Fillers Burgner researched and marked twenty-four graves of American Revolutionary War servicemen. She, along with other Daughters, began a tradition of research, documentation, and writing that continues. The chapter plays an active role in the greater Greeneville community. We continue our mission of: <span style=\"color: #9cbaad;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #a1997b;\">HISTORIC PRESERVATION<\/span> \u2014 our chapter continues to maintain and improve local historic sites, such as Old Harmony Cemetery, earning recognition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tndar.org\/~nolachuckey\/index.php\/awards\/\">awards<\/a> for this work.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #a1997b;\">EDUCATION <\/span>\u2014 our chapter sponsors contests, scholarships, and grants for local students and educators every year.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #a1997b;\">PATRIOTISM<\/span> \u2014 our chapter continues the work of memorializing our patriot ancestors as well as honoring the patriotic acts of those in our community, including the naturalization of new American citizens.<\/li><\/ul><p>As current Nolachuckey Daughters, we are excited to continue these efforts and further our mission.
